Stairs for handicapped people

Hi Stairs.eu,

My brother's a paraplegic. He's completely paralysed from the waist down. He's been having problems getting up the stairs between the living room and his bedroom because the stairs are just impossible for him to climb on his own.

When I came upon your site and saw some of the solutions that you've provided for other people, I thought maybe there could be an innovative stair design or technique that could aid my brother get up the stairs all by himself.

Thanks,
johnedwards555

Hi johnedwards555,

I'm sorry to hear about your brother's condition. I think we have a stair design that can suit that very need. I'll try and describe it to you in detail:

The most suitable design would be an escalator. It would however have to specially made. The escalator steps would be slightly larger, such that the diameter of your brother's wheel chair can fit snugly onto a step. This would allow your brother to roll in his wheel chair onto them without any danger of him not fitting.

The additional device that each step would have would be a stopper. This can come in many forms depending on which one you see fit.

You could have:
1. A depression in every stair of the escalator such that a wheel chair would come and fit easily into it without rolling back.
2. We could also fit a stopper at the back of the escalator which bends inwards towards the escalator and not outwards preventing your brother from falling when he gets onto the steps as he won't be able to move backwards.

They're so many other techniques that we could use but I feel that one of these could pose to be the best.

Another option you could also consider would be a lift. Let us know what you think and we'll get back to you.

Regards,
Stairs.eu

Thanks for you quick reply. Escalators - doesn't sound like a bad idea. Is it possible to see their designs - just a sample of what a step would look like.

I like the stair designs - they're really beautiful. I especially like stair number 5. Please put me in touch with one of your architects - I'd really like number 5.
