Hi johnedwards555,

I'm sorry to hear about your brother's condition. I think we have a stair design that can suit that very need. I'll try and describe it to you in detail:

The most suitable design would be an escalator. It would however have to specially made. The escalator steps would be slightly larger, such that the diameter of your brother's wheel chair can fit snugly onto a step. This would allow your brother to roll in his wheel chair onto them without any danger of him not fitting.

The additional device that each step would have would be a stopper. This can come in many forms depending on which one you see fit.

You could have:
1. A depression in every stair of the escalator such that a wheel chair would come and fit easily into it without rolling back.
2. We could also fit a stopper at the back of the escalator which bends inwards towards the escalator and not outwards preventing your brother from falling when he gets onto the steps as he won't be able to move backwards.

They're so many other techniques that we could use but I feel that one of these could pose to be the best.

Another option you could also consider would be a lift. Let us know what you think and we'll get back to you.

My brother's a paraplegic. He's completely paralysed from the waist down. He's been having problems getting up the stairs between the living room and his bedroom because the stairs are just impossible for him to climb on his own.

When I came upon your site and saw some of the solutions that you've provided for other people, I thought maybe there could be an innovative stair design or technique that could aid my brother get up the stairs all by himself.

Thanks,

Hi blakheart,

The type of technique we use to design the stair most of the time depends on the architect involved as well as the kind of stair that is required. Most of our architects design stairs using CAD drawings. Due to their work on numerous stairs all over the world, they have stair designs for almost all conceivable needs (although I must admit some needs take us by surprise!).

Then there is the more traditional kind of architect who prefers to sketch stairs by hand and to use his or her hands to come up with a plan for the particular stairs. They're surprisingly creative and beautiful stairs capturing more art than a computer aided design stair.

Such architects are rare to find and their exquisite stairs cost a pretty penny above the normal stair. So in summary, I'd say we pretty much use CAD as well as freehand drawings to design our stairs.

You’d be surprised at how creative our architects and engineers can be when designing a straight stair.

I believe that aesthetically straight stairs still match the beauty of other stairs. By use of different materials of high quality on these stairs such as glass or maybe perhaps wood or steel these stairs can achieve a beautiful finish.

About the space they occupy - these stairs actually conserve space as they just run straight down from the next floor. They would conservere more space in comparison to say spiral stairs

Hi abbot402,

Straight stairs are usually the most affordable kind of stairs because they are the easiest to build. Straight stairs are called so because they go straight up from the ground to the next floor.

They’re pretty good stairs but I wouldn’t recommend them for a stair base height (height of the stair from the floor to the next floor) of more than 5 meters. This is due to how unsafe it would be to go up and down the stairs without falling or dizzy spells if you have a medical condition.

If you know that your stair base height is more than 5 meters I’d recommend a different design of straight stairs, that is, a straight stairs with a landing. This will ease the distance and still be cost effective. I hope I’ve been able to answer you question, but if not please let me know.

Hi paliweb52,

We had not considered putting architectural drawings on the site. Our main purpose to allow you to get in touch with some of the best architects and stair building companies so that you get the best possible quality design for your stairs be it for business, pleasure, comfort, etc.

Also if you have any questions about stairs, you can get it from the Stairs.eu community composed of hundreds of architects and companies.

Regards,
